Launch and Learn
Updated: Dec 26, 2022
Now that I finally have one blog post up, maybe I can gain some momentum in this new travel blogger journey of mine. Admittedly, I am overwhelmed. I know nothing about technology, graphic arts, marketing, self-promotion, or being on camera--which apparently is something that is expected nowadays. "Start doing Instagram reels, Joy," they said...."it will be fun," they said. "You need to get a Tik Tok account if you want to make it. Oh, and you have to do Pinterest because no one will find your blog if you don't do Pinterest." All this advice and you know what I want to do?
Scream! It makes my head spin because the deeper down the rabbit hole I go in learning about blogging, the more lost I become, and then I just want to say screw it, this is too much work, what is the point?
And as my brain has time to reset from the information overload, I gently remind myself of my why. Because you love to write. Because you love to travel. Because you love to help people. Because you want to empower others. And I repeat that mantra as I open my laptop and turn the video camera off of my phone from my fiftieth attempt to try to create some kind of relevant reel content that will somehow make it through the thick layers of confusing social media algorithms. How quickly I remember I am losing myself in the process. Trying to do what everyone else seems to be doing. Trying to be funny. Trying to be witty. Trying to fit in. Trying to entertain. Hell, my introverted, socially anxious, self just trying to form two sentences on video is a struggle, let alone dancing, coming up with funny jokes, or catching my cats doing something cool enough to film so I can showcase their antics.
And you know what all that is?
Exhausting, and it is not me. Maybe one day, but trying to fit in the "reel" world is simply not me. I truly don't know what I am doing. It seems I have entered into the blogging world when reading isn't much of a thing anymore.
What I have learned so far is:
1. Cat videos will almost always be noticed.
2. If you can move to the latest dance trends, you've got it made.
3. If you are a comedian, you've got it made.
4. If you are gutsy enough to post some really personal, raw, sensitive content, that will make it if you can get past all the haters who take that as an opportunity to get some digs in.
But regular old, awkward me? Nah, I think I will stick to writing and posting pictures. If I post videos, it will likely be of where I am traveling and the scenery that surrounds me. But improv videos will be a challenge. Occasionally I have been known to do some Facebook live videos, but something has generally occurred to trigger an adrenaline rush for me to overcome the anxiety of speaking on camera for me to do that.
Otherwise, I really struggle in front of the camera.
Okay, why am I saying all this? Why does it matter?
Because you know what? You really don't have to know everything to get started with something. Just start somewhere. Launch and then learn. If you wait to have all the information, and know-how, or for the stars and moon to line up just right, chances are, you won't ever start.
I've been a business owner for over 10 years now. I remember starting my practice with folding chairs and an appointment book. I somehow managed to launch a successful private counseling practice. Certainly, I can write blog posts and tune out the chatter of everyone in the industry saying do this or do that. Looking back, I don't think I became successful by following the masses of what everyone else was doing in the industry. And while it is important to be open to learning new things and learning from others, at some point you just have to be you. Messy, confused, awkward, fumbling you. And you learn, you polish, and then you refine.
What do I have to offer right now? Well, I like to do stuff and things, and I like to encourage others to do the same. I also like to showcase the stuff and things I am doing in hopes that I can teach others to do some stuff and things. So, if you still like to read, you like to look at pictures, and you like to do stuff and things, then I hope that you will enjoy the content coming up.
I am looking forward to watching myself grow from not knowing anything about this industry to being comfortable enough to share information through video.
For now, as I launch and learn, expect messiness. But it will be fun, ;) I hope you will stick it out with me. If you are interested in solo travel, whether throughout the US or internationally, outdoor travel and adventure, solo female travel, incorporating mindfulness with adventure, are new to traveling or have never really traveled before and are wanting to get out of your comfort zone, this blog is for YOU.
What are you working on right now that you feel awkward, messy, and maybe even feel like an imposter?
